Songwriting for the Guitarist

This course will focus on songwriting techniques used by many successful artists in the industry and will illustrate how to put your own ideas into music and lyrics for a complete song. This course will give you the opportunity to ask questions and hear examples and advice from an experienced songwriter, as well as learning how to promote your songs once they are complete.

Entry requirements

This course would suit any beginner guitarist up to intermediate level and beyond, though it is not recommended if you are an absolute novice guitarist. No formal qualifications are required, you just need an interest in the subject area.

Course content

The course will look at the foundations of both writing song lyrics and how chords and melodies accompany them. You will look at various popular styles, such as pop, rock, folk and blues. The course will focus on guitar development as delivered by an experienced guitar tutor.

Assessment methods

You will be assessed through tutor/peer observation, as well as continuous informal assessment.

Further study and career options

This course will prepare you for additional intermediate and advanced guitar courses at the College, and will give you a good grounding for working in the music industry.

Additional information

You are required to supply your own acoustic or electric guitar and any accessories. No amps are required and will be supplied as needed.
