Operations/Departmental Manager Higher Apprenticeship Level 5

This apprenticeship is suitable if you are or you wish to become an operations/departmental manager. You could be at the start of your career or be an aspiring or existing manager who has developed practical experience but wish to develop your theoretical understanding of management skills further. The apprenticeship includes work-based learning, business education (where the CMI Level 5 Diploma in Management & Leadership is incorporated) and the opportunity for membership of the Chartered Management Institute on completion of the apprenticeship.

Entry requirements

Grade requirements: You will need a minimum of five GCSEs at grades A-C or 9-4, or equivalent.

Other requirements: Apprentices without Level 2 English and mathematics will need to achieve this prior to taking the end point assessment.

Course content

The Level 5 Diploma in Management and Leadership consists of the following units:

  • Principles of Operational Leadership and Management in an Organisational Context
  • Principles of Developing, Managing and Leading Individuals and Teams to Achieve Success
  • Managing Stakeholder Relationships
  • Managing Projects to Achieve Results
  • Managing Change
  • Creating and Delivering Operational Plans
  • Managing Finance
  • Using Reflective Practice to Inform Personal and Professional Development

Assessment methods

Assignments for CMI Diploma

  • Portfolio of evidence of knowledge and demonstration of skills and behaviours
  • A work-based project

End point assessment will include:

  • Knowledge test, competency based interview, assessment of portfolio of evidence, presentation of work-based project approach and findings and professional discussion relating to CPD activity
  • Examination for English and Maths Level 2 if required

Qualifications

You will gain the following qualifications:

Level 5 Diploma in Management and Leadership

Operations/Departmental Manager Apprenticeship Level 5

Plus…

  • Functional Skills in English and maths Level 2 (if required)

Further study and career options

Further study: You may wish to progress to specific professional areas such as the Certificate/Diploma in HR Practice or HR Management or Marketing, or Level 6/7 in Management.

Future careers: On completion, you can register as a full member with the Chartered Management Institute and/or the Institute of Leadership & Management and those with 3 years’ of management experience can apply for Chartered Manager status through the CMI.

Next steps

To be eligible for an apprenticeship you must either be employed on a full-time contract by an employer willing to support your training or have an offer of employment as an apprentice. Bedford College can help you find a job role with an employer if you don’t already have one.
