The Bedford College Group Board of Governors

Our governors come from a wide range of backgrounds and carry out their duties as governors mainly through Board meetings or Committee meetings. The membership details of each governor are given below and where the governor has provided more information you can follow a link to read about their background.

Chief Executive, Staff and Student Governors

The Chief Executive is automatically offered a position on the Board of Governors.

Staff governors are elected for two year terms by the College staff, staff from any site or any job role are eligible to stand. Student governors are chosen by the student body and are appointed for a one year term.

» Roger Marriott (Chair of the Corporation)

Roger joined the Corporation of Bedford College in March 2009 and is currently the Chair of the Corporation as of 1 August 2017 appointed for a two year term.

A background in the management of further education, and as a system engineer with IBM UK. Some 15 years as a lecturer and manager in F&HE, with experience of teaching mathematics and computing at all levels, from entry level to first degree, as head of department managing and leading the development of FE and HE curricula and contributing to national committees.

Sixteen years as an inspector, appointed HMI in 1988, with DfE, FEFC and as divisional manager with Ofsted: leading FE and HE inspections widely; including inspection of colleges, management and governance, and leading national surveys; responsible nationally for the initial round of Ofsted FE college inspections; instigated the college performance report; and nationally responsible for 14-19 inspections across local authority areas assessing collaborative strategies for educational provision between colleges, schools, local authorities and training providers.

Four years as National Director of Quality with the Learning and Skills Council: worked closely with Government departments on the development of policy for the FE sector especially in, performance management, intervention and quality assessment; responsible for the development of performance measures including value added, Framework for Excellence and minimum levels of performance. On retirement from the LSC in 2008 he took up the role as Chief Assessor for the AoC Beacon Awards and membership of the panel for the Queen’s Anniversary Awards to FHE until 2016.

» Ian Pryce CBE (Chief Executive & Principal)

Principal Ian Pryce

Ian Pryce has been Principal & Chief Executive of Bedford College since 1998, having joined the College in 1996 as Finance Director.  He was previously a regional Finance Director at the Further Education Funding Council and has also worked as a Director or Senior Manager in retail, electricity generation and local government in Liverpool, Derbyshire, Nottingham and Northamptonshire.  He is a member of the accountancy body CIPFA, a Councillor of City & Guilds, a member of the Information Authority, and a member of the advisory board to the Skills Funding Agency.  He was one of the founder members of the 157 Group and was awarded a CBE in the 2011 Queen’s Birthday Honours.

» Casandra Daubney (External Governor)

Casandra

Casandra joined the Corporation of The Bedford College Group in August 2017 for a four year term.  She is currently a member of the Audit Committee and the Quality Committee.

Casandra has lived in Bedford since she was 9 years old!  She attended Bedford College (then Mander College) and completed a BTEC General Diploma and National Certificate in Business Studies and Finance.  This success then sparked further studies where she went on to qualify as a Chartered Management Accountant.

Casandra is an experienced and highly motivated professional interim, working at Director Level on Programmes for Transformation and Business Development.  With a background in Finance Transformation, she has utilised her experience across a number of sectors including: banking, financial services, NHS, police, building and construction.

» Richard Dimbleby (External Governor)

Richard Dimbleby

Richard Dimbleby joined the Corporation of The Bedford College Group in May 2018 for a four year term.  He is currently a member of the Audit Committee and the Quality Committee.

Richard did undergraduate and postgraduate study at Kings College London and is an Associate of Kings College.   He has wide experience of teaching and management in Further and Higher Education in the UK and has also taught at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. He has taught English, communications, education and management.  He was Principal at Strode College in Somerset and Principal & Chief Executive at The Bournemouth and Poole College.

Richard has also been a part-time college inspector and a consultant for the Association of Colleges and other organisations where he specialised in quality development, strategic management and governance. He has been a Governor at the Arts University Bournemouth and at Weymouth College.

Outside education, Richard was a Director and President of the Dorset Chamber of Commerce and Industry and a Trustee of several charities. He is co-author of four books on communication.  He is a Fellow of the Chartered Management Institute and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.

Richard has recently returned to Northamptonshire where he grew up and is particularly interested in supporting The Bedford College Group in serving the needs of its communities and in contributing to local economic and cultural development.

» Noel Gray (External Governor)

Noel Gray

Noel became a governor in August 2015 appointed for a 4 year term. 

Noel worked for fifteen years as a business and data analyst, where he recognised that high performance requires focus on both the task and the people.

For the last ten years, he has run a business as an executive coach, facilitator and trainer with experience of working with a variety of organisations across the private, public and third sectors. He has worked with executives and managers from South Africa, China, India and Australia, as well as the UK and the rest of Europe. He helps individuals to understand their strengths, and find clarity in who they are and the direction they wish to travel. 

An advocate of life-long learning Noel has a first degree in professional judgment, ethics and decision making, and a masters in the public understanding of science; both from the Open University. He is a fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. 


» Greg Guilford (External Governor)

Greg Guildford

Greg has worked in Human Resources for many years both in the UK and the Middle East, and is also the Chief Executive Officer of a local HR Consultancy. 

Throughout his career in Human Resources, Greg has always had close links with educational and professional bodies. 

Greg joined the Board of Governors at Tresham in February 2017 and was a member of the Remuneration Committee. He was appointed to the Board of Bedford College on 1 August 2017.

» Mark Lawson (External Governor)

Mark Lawson Bedford College 2017 Governor

Mark completed an Engineering Apprenticeship in the early 1990s with Hunting Engineering and educated in Mechanical Manufacture at Bedford College. He started his career as an Environmental Test Engineer later moving into Test Facility Management in 2001, he is now a Functional Leader with focus on Employee Development and Engagement.

Under his guidance the department has successfully grown to support the strategic aims of the business now including Environmental Test, Materials Laboratory, Prototype Manufacture and Assembly and Test. In 2013 his responsibility as Head of Engineering Technical Facilities at Lockheed Martin was increased to oversee the development of the apprenticeship scheme. They now employ 20 apprentices and he is responsible for their in-company training and education currently delivered at Bedford College.

Mark is very proud to be the winner of the 2016 Lockheed Martin UK Excellence Award in Full Spectrum Leadership and was included within the Manufacturer Top 100 2017 report which recognises inspiring individuals in the UK, both these awards are in recognition of his commitment to early careers and work in improving employee engagement.

Through supporting outreach activities with local schools and colleges he became a Governor at Central Beds UTC then applied to make the move to the Bedford College Board in August 2016 and was successfully appointed for a 4 year term. He is driven by helping Bedford College ensure that students receive the best experience possible while at Bedford College.

He is married with a step-daughter, his interests are Rugby, Darts, MotoGP, live music and playing the guitar.

» Sol Miah (External Governor)

During his time as a student at Bedford College, Sol was amazed at the quality of education and fantastic tutor support the College had provided him with. This included subjects at A-Levels and a professional management course. As a result, he progressed to senior management teams in the retail sector and completed postgraduate qualifications. He is applying those skills and knowledge gained as a student, to his current organisations. Bedford College has played an important role in his development, since he first enrolled as a 17 year old.

He became a Governor in 2011 because he wanted to give back to the College, for all the support and encouragement they gave him as a student. Since then, he has gained skills and knowledge in improving the student experience, creating and delivering the College’s strategic plans, financial management, risk management, internal control, people strategy, governance and organisational development, to name a few.

He has been Vice-Chair of the HR, Audit and Quality, Standards & Achievements Committees. He has also served on the Search & Governance and Remuneration Committees. He is currently a member of the Resources and the Quality, Standards & Achievements Committees.

As a Governor, he feels it is his duty to ensure that the College continues to provide a high quality education to all learners, which leads to personal and professional growth and contributions to the community. He has benefitted from it and he would like others to gain from the College as well. Apart from work and study, he has a keen interest in rugby, writing, cinema and filmmaking.

» Allan Schofield (External Governor)

Allan Scholfield

Allan has been a governor of Bedford College since July 2014 appointed for a 4 year term.

Professionally early in his career he was a university academic and manager before setting up the Higher Education Consultancy Group in 1986.  As a consultant he has worked on assignments for more than 80 universities and colleges, as well as on projects for all the main stakeholder bodies in UK higher education.  He has also worked overseas for a number of international bodies.

Major previous projects most relevant to being a governor of Bedford College include: substantial work on enhancing the quality of governance in post-16 education, including writing a major national report on: ‘What is an Effective and High Performing Governing Body in Higher Education?’; leading numerous governor development and support activities in post-16 education; undertaking substantial policy review work for HEFCE (the body which regulates English higher education); and in 2009 being commissioned by the Government and the Association of Colleges to lead a review of the governance of the whole of the FE sector in England, which eventually lead to the production of the FE Code of Governance.

He lives locally in Ravensden, and other interests include travel, classical music, and wine.

» Sheila Selwood MBE (External Governor)

Sheila Selwood

From a background of training and management in the newspaper and computer industries, Sheila moved into education nearly 30 years ago, spending 6 years as a primary school Finance Secretary and 12 years as a secondary school Business Manager, also clerking both respective Governing Bodies.  In 2004 she joined West Herts College as Director of Governance.  It had just received poor inspection and audit outcomes.  During a two year recovery period, the college and its governance went from satisfactory to good, and five years later to outstanding, and this was sustained.

During this time, she also worked as a national and regional associate, delivering governance workshops, inductions, one to one support and qualification programmes, aimed at improving the effectiveness of college clerks and governors.  This work continues to this day in her roles as an independent governance advisor and regional associate for ACER and AOSEC.

In recent years she has also been Vice-Chair of the National Clerks Network, Chair of the ACER Clerks Regional Network, and a member of the AoC Governor Council.  In 2015 she was honoured to be awarded an MBE for services to Further Education.

She joined the board of Bedford College in August 2015 for a 4 year term.

She is married with two sons and three grandsons.  Her free time activities include swimming, walking, rock music and travelling whenever she can, particularly to the national parks in the USA.


» Alasdair Simmons (External Governor)

Alasdair SimmonsHaving grown up in Bedford from age 11, I went off to study Chemical Engineering at Loughborough University and returned eventually in 2006 as a qualified accountant and MBA from Warwick Business School.  My career started as an accountancy trainee in a large industrial manufacturer, progressed through various large and medium sized companies across a range of sectors, and has now allowed me to run my own consultancy company specialising in change projects / programmes involving finance and other business systems.

I applied for my role as a Governor at Bedford College as I believe that my skills and experience can add value to the development and execution of the Board’s strategy to develop a leading educational establishment for Bedford and the surrounding areas.

» Shaun Wilson (Staff Governor)

Shaun Wilson

Shaun Wilson is a Staff Governor.  He is in his tenth year as a lecturer at Tresham College. Following an election, Shaun was appointed to the Board on 3rd May 2017 for a two year term, that appointment being agreed to continue with the Board of Bedford College following merger.

Shaun is currently ihis final year studying for a BSc in Psychology with the Open University, with an aspiration to help young people as an educational psychologist.
