The Gift Project – Jubilee – Bunting Workshop and TV

The Gift Project

On Monday 4th June

Northfield Hall will be holding a bunting making workshop to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. Come and help us make some traditional bunting and even take some home with you for your own special party. Making starts at 10am! All are welcome and no sewing, sticking or cutting experience necessary, just enthusiasm and time. Hope to see you all there!

On Tuesday 5th June

Are you planning to watch the Jubilee celebrations on TV on Tuesday 5th June? Then why not come and watch with us, at Northfield Hall. Bring with you any Royal memorabilia you have from previous events, e.g. mugs, hats, photographs and share you memories with us. If you don’t have any thing then just bring a photograph of yourself from 1977, when the Queen had her Silver Jubilee. Flag waving begins at 11am. Hope to see you there for a right royal view!

at Brackenhall Community Centre

Culture Club, a new project for Open Art, is a great new way for people aged over 55 living in Kirklees to enjoy some of the best cultural experiences in the region and beyond, in the company of others who share similar interests. It’s free to join, and each event is individually priced on a sliding scale according to ability to pay. Our Spring programme includes ‘Singing and Shenanigans’ at Brackenhall Community Centre – 6 singing sessions with a focus on fun, and open to anyone with a bit of enthusiasm to give it a go. Don’t worry if you think you can’t sing, come along to as many or as few sessions as you like, and give it a go!

After the success of our last singing session, and our belief in the positive effects of singing, we wanted to offer even more opportunity to raise the roof and find your voice. Whether you think you sing like a bird or are more akin to their furry foes, we believe that our singing leader, who will teach by ear, can help you achieve sweet harmony with other members in a very short space of time. You will be inspired by songs new and familiar, some locally grown and others from across the world and because this is a 6 week workshop project, running every other week over 12 weeks, there’s opportunity to learn more, improve your voice, convince your friends and neighbours to give it a go and generally feel fabulous from the experience. If you love singing, even in secret, don’t miss this opportunity for singing and a few shenanigans.

CONSTRUCTION at Brackenhall Community Centre is on track for a spring completion date.

Brackenhall Community Trust has just announced that its new building, which has now been officially named Northfield Hall, is progressing well.

The majority of the external work is now complete and work to the interior areas now well under way. The expected completion date is mid to late April.

The project, which began more than 10 years ago, has had many ups and downs, including times when it was feared it would not go ahead. Finally, in early 2011, things began to fall into place and contractors QSP Construction started work last July.

Northfield Hall is located in the heart of the Brackenhall and Ferndale estates in Sheepridge and will have a wide range of facilities to cater for the whole community, as well as doubling up as a good quality venue for special occasions and business use.

The Trust secured funding from Deighton and Brackenhall Initiative Limited (DBI). The existing centre has been a solid hub for the community, but has been running at near capacity for many years and the facilities have begun to show their age.

Trust chairman Joan Mallinson said: “I am really excited that construction of Northfield Hall is nearing completion.

“After many years of hard work by many people it feels like the end is in sight. Now the building has a name and identity it feels that bit more real.

“As a Trust we are committed to ensuring that Northfield Hall will offer the best facilities and service possible for the local community now and for the future. I’m looking forward to seeing you all there in the coming months.”

Clr Jean Calvert, chairman of the DBI Ltd board, said: “A new community facility for the Brackenhall and Ferndale estates has been one of DBI’s priorities since the very beginning.

“The time and commitment we have put into the project, along with the Trust and not to mention the major funding DBI has invested, shows our intent to make sure the community receives the best possible facility.

“We are aware of the need to ensure Northfield Hall is sustainable so it can serve the local community for years to come. That is why we are working closely with a wide range of partners to achieve this goal.

“The project is further proof of DBI’s commitment to developing better facilities and services within the area with the aim of improving the quality of life for all its residents.”

The existing centre is located on Longhill Road within the housing re-development which is being undertaken by the Deighton and Brackenhall Initiative Limited (DBI) and is part of the wider regeneration activity in the area. The existing centre section of the site details the groups and activities that take place as well as full timetable of what is currently going on inside the centre.

As a Trust we have worked hard now for many years to develop our vision of a new build community centre that can improve the facilities and serve the needs of our users within our existing community centre and also allow new groups and activities to develop as the new housing on the estate is built out. With the support of the DBI and other partners we are now pleased to announce that the new centre should be open in Spring 2012.
